Why is Acai a Superfood?

September 28, 2007

Well known nutritionist Dr Perricone describes the Amazon found acai berry as being a source of high energy, a proclaimed superfood, but not just any superfood, he says studies show it to be one of the most nutritious and powerful in the world. Benefits stated include its high content of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids.

He further recommends acai in its unsweetened pulp form for the most effective benefits, a form likely to be found in many health food stores. Perricone highlights what the acai pulp contains in the following:

  • A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.
  • A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.
  • An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration.

The anti-aging properties of the acai berry are also an attractive aspect of this fruit. Perricone explains the berry's fatty acid content is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid; this acid plays a part in reducing high insulin levels that create an inflammatory state, which leads to inflammation causing aging.
